Macrophages are a type of immune cell which play an important role in both the development and treatment of cancer. Some macrophages, characterized as M2, are immunosuppressive and lead to tumor growth, angiogenesis, and metastasis. Another class of macrophages, known as M1, elicit anti-tumor functions which can lead to cancer cell death.
