Macrophages can mediate phagocytosis of cancer cells and cytotoxic tumor killing, and engage in effective bidirectional interactions with components of the innate and adaptive immune system. Given the continuous recruitment of myelomonocytic cells into tumor tissues, macrophages are candidates for cell therapy with the development of chimeric antigen receptor effector cells.
For the tumor acidic environment (especially, in lung carcinomas), the goal is to describe the unique strategies involving nanomedicine-based co-delivery of a calcium channel inhibitor and CD47 inhibitor. The findings show that inhibitors TTA-Q9 and RRX-001 disrupt cancer cells' calcium uptake, leading to stress and calreticulin surface expression. This, in turn, activates macrophages and dendritic cells, enhancing T cell-driven antitumor activity.
