Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are key cells in the tumor microenvironment (TME) with diverse immune functions that have a major influence on tumorigenesis. Thus, TAMs have gained increasing attention as promising targets for the development of effective anti-cancer immunotherapy. In pre-clinical drug discovery research, in vitro macrophage assays are commonly performed to monitor the effect of immunotherapeutic candidates. These assays represent a helpful tool in predicting the effect of immunotherapeutics on TAMs in vivo.
