This discussion will focus on understanding the use of rotary valves in gas chromatography. The modes of operation for the most common 6-port and 10-port valve configurations along with their typical applications in gas chromatography will be discussed. Attendees will gain a basic understanding on how to think about the function of valves, how they are depicted in diagrams, and how they function in chromatography.

The unavailability of fluorescence dye has impacted the widely used D1319 method for determining total aromatics in reformulated gasoline.  To remain in compliance with EPA regulations, many labs are considering the more complex D5769 GC/MS method for total aromatics analysis.  This presentation will offer best practices for setting up, optimizing, and running this method on a new, cost effective Agilent 8860/5977 GC/MS system.  To further reduce operating expenses, the use of hydrogen carrier gas will be shown as well as a configuration to perform the analysis in less than 9 minutes.  For all three approaches, compliance with the D5769 performance criteria will be demonstrated.  Precision and accuracy will be evaluated using Tier III gasoline samples obtained from an inter-laboratory cross-check program (ILCP).

Agilent has been developing standard test methods used by the energy and chemical industry at ASTM. Collaborating with customers is at the core of test method development. This presentation provides a brief overview of the ASTM process and the standard test methods under development. A summary of standard test methods in development is presented, including spectroscopy, GC, and GCMS instruments.

Today with the increase in the need to work remotely, the need for an integrated workflow became imminent. We can no longer assume that LIMS and CDS, the workhorse in the laboratory, are information silo’s. With the addition of Sample Scheduler to the OpenLab CDS portfolio a digital workflow is supported. From sample retrieval, reception, dispatch to the individual instruments and final data review and approval, all can be linked and results are sent back to production Just In Time.

Helium supply problems and price increases have again impacted analytical chemists’ ability to run high resolution gas chromatography methods. Until new sources of helium can be found, laboratories can continue operation by combining two techniques; conversion to alternative carrier gases and conservation of helium resources.  This presentation will discuss when and how to use alternative carrier gases and when helium is required, new technologies to continue helium use with automated conservation.
