Nucleic acids ( i.e., DNA and RNA) are the key macromolecules of life, composed of nucleotide monomers that consist of a 5-carbon sugar ( ribose for DNA and deoxyribose for RNA), a base (adenine, guanine, thymine, cytosine, or uracil), and a phosphate group.
