Epigenetics involves alterations in organisms which occur when gene expression is modified but no mutations or alterations have occurred in the genetic code. Environmental epigenetics focuses on how environmental exposure to toxic substances can cause epigenetic changes. An example of an environmental toxicant that can induce epigenetic changes is bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical used in the manufacture of plastic.
