New conference, fascinating speakers…

LabRoots invites you to attend the First Annual Cannabis Sciences online conference! As a growing field of medicine and research with a regulatory landscape that is ever-changing, cannabis science is becoming more accepted for medical use. Challenged with navigating the regulatory arena, cannabis research elevates the understanding of metabolic processes to provide innovative treatment options for unmet medical needs. This year’s conference aims to drive collaboration and foster innovation from which new ideas expand into integrated solutions. Here are just three of a panel of experts speaking on cannabis science and how it is changing the world’s view of new medicine. Keynote Presentation: Treating with Cannabis presented by Jeff Hergenrather, MD Cannabis use, both recreational and as medicine is proliferating worldwide. It's reasonable to ask why people are using cannabis and who are appropriate candidates for cannabis therapy. The uses for cannabis continue to expand as more is learned about the roles of these molecules in our bodies. Even as punitive laws prohibit the use of cannabis most people will find a need and use for it during their lifetime.  It is neither addictive nor associated with a significant withdrawal syndrome, so it is easy to come and go from using it.  Some people shouldn't go without cannabis and others may never find the need for cannabis therapy. As a medicine it is useful to know the basic principles of cannabinoid therapy. This includes a basic understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the endocannabinoid system (ECS), the roles of the ECS, the immense safety of cannabis as it articulates with, and augments the beneficial functions of the ECS, differences in the ECS from person to person, differences in the breakdown or metabolism of cannabis molecules in humans, what we know about the treasure trove of medicinal molecules in the cannabis plant, and finally how all of this information can lead to developing a rational treatment plan for the use of cannabis. Jeff Hergenrather is a Consultation physician, President of the Society of Cannabis Clinicians, and Vice President of the American Academy of Cannabinoid Medicine (AACM) in Northern California. As a general practitioner specializing in cannabis/cannabinoid medicine since 1999, Dr. Hergenrather's practice, research, and teaching focus on the medicinal use of cannabis through a wide range of conditions and age groups - from infants to elder care. He is teaching a Biology course in the Medical Use of Cannabis at Sonoma State University and is a founding member and current president of the Society of Cannabis Clinicians, a non-profit corporation dedicated to quality patient care, education, and clinical studies. He is also a member of the International Cannabinoid Research Society (ICRS) and the International Association for Cannabinoids in Medicine (IACM). Global Cannabis Regulation and Testing Standards presented by Donald Land, PhD For a plant that has been medically legal in some states for over 20 years and recreationally legal in some states since 2014, there has been an attitude that “cannabis never killed anyone.” While we don’t have the necessary research to prove that the plant hasn’t killed anyone, we do have evidence that the contaminants on the cannabis plant have caused severe harm, especially in cases of immune-suppressed patients. With no FDA or USDA to oversee consumer product testing, US States, growers and manufacturers are on their own to ensure properly labeled and safe product for patients and consumers are released in the marketplace. With the best science and technology is available today, learn why safety testing for cannabis products will ensure correct potency labelling, reliable brands and products, prevent product recalls and lead to an industry that can meet global standards for safety and health. As Chief Scientific Consultant, Dr. Land guides the Science and Product Development groups at Steep Hill Labs, Inc. His role includes optimizing scientific processes in the business, developing best practices, and evaluating new business opportunities from a scientific perspective. Dr. Land is a nationally recognized scientific expert on the chemistry of the cannabis plant and is in great demand as an educational speaker on its effects. Dr. Land is also a currently tenured professor at UC Davis where his research spans the fields of Forensic Science, Biotechnology and Sensor Development. Dr. Land is a member of the UC Davis Forensic Science Graduate Group and the Designated Emphasis in Biotechnology, in addition to his continuing position in Chemistry. At UC Davis, he developed a program in interfacial analytical chemistry and a wide-ranging program in forensic chemistry. Selecting a safe and clean cannabis product. A parent's quest to find the best medicine for his son presented by Sebastien Cotte With 46 states having some form of medical cannabis program to date, we are experiencing a “green rush” where everyone is trying to sell some type of cannabis products to parents/patients. Unfortunately, not every company is putting safe, clean and reliable products out in the market. This presentation will cover a few guidelines on how to select the best possible cannabis product based on three main principles, review what to look for when buying a cannabis product, and how parents/patients can have a little extra peace of mind about their cannabis product by following a few simple steps. Sebastien Cotte is currently the Director and Board Member for the Flowering Hope Foundation. He became actively involved in the field of medical marijuana in 2013 while seeking alternative treatments for his son Jagger's, rare terminal Mitochondrial disease. In 2014, with his wife Annett, they became medical refugees in Colorado to access cannabis oil for Jagger. They lived in Colorado for 13 months before moving back to Georgia. He serves as an ambassador for the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation and is one of the co-founder of Georgia's Hope, the leadership parent group that was successful in getting a Medical Cannabis law passed in Georgia (HB1 Haleigh's Hope). Sebastien is also on the board of advisor of MDherb, a cannabis education website, the Georgia action group leader for Americans with Safe Access and the VP of the "Talk to the 6630507 hand" campaign which aim at de-scheduling cannabis.
