A Weapon of a Different Kind

The nuclear research lab at Los Alamos is known for one kind of weapon, the atomic bomb. Now however, the facility is being put to use in another fight. Researchers at the secure compound are developing radioactive materials that can be used to treat certain kinds of cancer.

While traditional treatments of radiation for cancer can damage healthy cells and surrounding tissue, the working being done at Los Alamos could change that. Pairing radioactive isotopes with proteins that target only the diseased cells, the experiments being conducted at the National Research Lab in New Mexico could soon offer cancer patients a more powerful and less debilitating treatment for cancer.
