The Zera™ Food Recycler is a kitchen device that can turn food scraps into fertilizer within 24 hours. This in-home solution attempts to decrease the high amount of waste in our food system -- Americans alone waste tens of millions of tons of food each year.
The recycler comes with a Zera™ additive pack, which users add before filling the container with food scraps. The additive is made of coir, a fibrous material sourced from coconut shells, and baking soda. Once full, the device’s “transforming cycle” can be started with a button or via a remote app. The company points out that this type of food recycling is quicker and cleaner than typical composting processes. It is also unique in that it can integrate meat and dairy, which are usually left out of composting systems.
This food recycler from WLabs won the CES 2017 Best of Innovation Award in the Eco-Design and Sustainable Technologies category.
