If you were to take to the streets and poll random people about what a bullfrog likes to eat, chances are most would answer with “insects.” But just how accurate is this answer?
While there’s no questioning the fact that bullfrogs eat insects, this lone fact may be substantially overstated. In fact, insects only comprise of a small percentage of what bullfrogs like to eat. A bullfrog’s complete menu is far more diverse than many realize.
As it turns out, bullfrogs aren’t picky eaters. They’ll eat just about anything that moves and that fits inside the confines of their months. Insects aside, bullfrogs have been known to consume spiders, scorpions, and small fish. In some cases, bullfrogs have been observed eating birds, rodents, and even other bullfrogs.
Unlike many other predators, bullfrogs lack intimidating or tactical features, such as claws, sharp teeth, or offensive maneuvers. Instead, they use their sticky tongues and large mouths to scoop up unsuspecting prey and swallow it whole.
When it comes to food, bullfrogs will stalk their prey and move more than 40 feet to grab a bite. After a successful meal, they’ll hop back to safety in their watery home.
