Exploring the Antioxidant Benefits of CBD in Wound Recovery

How can cannabis oil contribute to skin healing and wound recovery? This is what a recent study published in the journal Pharmaceutics hopes to address as a team of researchers from India and Thailand investigated the benefits of Cannabis sativa oil (also called simply cannabis oil) for helping the human body recovery from acute and chronic wounds. This study holds the potential to help scientists, medical professionals, legislators, and the public better understand the health benefits of cannabis compared to traditional treatment methods.

For the study, the researchers conducted a literature review regarding how the antioxidant properties of cannabis oil could help decrease the amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which causes the cell and tissue damage that contributes to wounds. In the end, they found a severe lack of published scientific data regarding the benefits of cannabis oil on wound healing and emphasized further researcher is required to better understand the benefits and challenges of using cannabis oil in place of traditional treatment methods.

The study notes, “Despite extensive research into the pharmacological and pharmacokinetic properties of CBD, there are surprisingly few clinical trials focused specifically on its application in wound healing. However, these studies lay a strong foundation for understanding how CBD behaves in the body, its safety profile, and its potential therapeutic effects across various conditions.”

This study comes on the heels of recent studies that examined the role of cannabis oil in treating musculoskeletal (MSK) pain, a federal study examining cannabis pain treatment, and another federal study comparing cannabis to morphine in pain treatment.

What new discoveries about cannabis oil and wound healing will researchers make in the coming years and decades? Only time will tell, and this is why we science!

As always, keep doing science & keep looking up!
