When cannabis is legalized, people have questions. The state of Vermont created a new website to advise people on safe medical and recreational cannabis use.
“Let’s Talk Cannabis” is a new online resource that premiered in Vermont this month. The state is hoping to address frequent FAQs regarding medical and recreational cannabis use and, the site states, “By providing science-based information, the Health Department is working to increase awareness about cannabis and how it affects our bodies, minds and health.” The site was adapted from a similar resource in California, courtesy of the California Department of Public Health.
According to the Associated Press, Vermont Health Commissioner Dr. Mark Levine said, as with the use of any substance, cannabis introduces health risks. He said the new web portal will give Vermonters the information they need to make safe and informed decisions.
Topics on the new site include information for parents and mentors, who may be engaging with youth on the topic of cannabis; cannabis and youth, for people under 21; cannabis, pregnancy and breastfeeding; cannabis information for health care providers, meant to aid practitioners with medical marijuana; the responsible adult use of cannabis, which covers topics related to driving, marijuana’s effects, synthetic marijuana, how cannabis can affect young people and pets; and more.
Both medical and recreational cannabis are legal in Vermont. Its recreational legalization was somewhat unusual in that it took the form of legislation rather than a popular vote. Adults are allowed to grow marijuana at home. However, a commercial marijuana retail system has not been created. A measure currently in committee, S. 54, seeks to move the process of taxing and regulating cannabis sales forward in the state.
