A virus contains a genome made up of all the genetic information present in the virus. The viral genome is encapsulated by a protein capsid to protect the RNA or DNA molecules. In some viruses, an envelope surrounds the capsid. Enzymes are needed for a virus to infect a host cell which occurs when a virus inserts its genome into a host cell and begins to replicate.
