Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)is the process of taking a tiny needle, called a micropipette, and using it to inject a single sperm into the center of the ova (egg).Once the egg is fertilized (now called an embryo) it now grows in a laboratory for about 5 days and then it is transferred into a woman's uterus. This procedure is used when the sperm is unable to penetrate the outer layer of the egg. The eggs outer layer may be too thick or the sperm may be unable to swim. ICSI is done along with IVF (in vitro fertilization) to assist in fertilizing the egg.
