Glycans, also known as polysaccharides, are carbohydrate-containing polymers that support functions like cellular structure and energy storage. Glycans are located on proteins but can be released via facilitation with an enzyme called peptide-N-glycosidase F (GNGase F). Glycans are released into the extracellular environment of the cell where they facilitate communication with other cells. Glycan release allows cells to obtain signals to alter their microenvironment when needed to support the cell.
