Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are characterized as cancerous cells that break off from a primary tumor mass and enter the blood circulation where they can facilitate metastasis. CTC detection is used as a clinical tool to diagnose cancer and access a patient's prognosis. Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) are tiny pieces of DNA released from dying tumor cells. Doctors can evaluate ctDNA in blood samples to determine the mutational burden in the tumor. Understanding the mutations within the tumor can be used to aid in treatment planning.
