Active tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious disease caused by the TB bacteria (Mycobacterium tuberculosis). Active TB can spread from person to person, typically through the air. If infected, active, or alive, TB bacteria grow in the human host, destroying tissues and cells throughout the body.
