This session will use case examples to highlight the importance of fundamental laboratory methods in diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of blood cancers in pediatric and adult patients.

The Molecular Twin is a proof-of-principle platform that combines data from several clinical and molecular analytes from both tumor and host and applies AI and machine learning approaches to identify specific multi-omic biomarker panels which are highly predictive of disease survival outcome. When used in surgically resected pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), the platform established a model which best predicted survival in patients as well as generated multiple models with significantly better predictive performance than the current PDAC marker of CA 19-9. This event will also cover how these models can both be implemented in resource-poor areas and similarly generated for additional types of cancer.

The most common forms of pediatric tumors are acute leukemia (33%), brain tumors (25%), and lymphomas (15%). Diagnosing these tumors utilizes various tests, including those performed by a pathologist (such as IHC) and those that are platform-based (like NGS). The findings from these tests influence treatment options, and pediatric cancers are increasingly treatable pathologies as advanced therapeutics are now available. Bone marrow transplants, immunotherapy, and genetically modified cells that attack tumors are all examples of these therapeutic options. This event will focus on brain and hematological tumors, including identification of biomarkers, discussion of the testing landscape, and review of potential diagnostic hurdles.

Early detection and management of early-stage cancers are keys for improved quality of life, survival, and to reduce the financial burden of cancer treatments which are much greater at later stage detection. However, many issues exist in routine clinical practice, notably for biomarkers assessment and rapid access to optimal care of the early-stage cancers. We will present the current challenges in early-stage cancer care.

Measurable or minimal residual disease (MRD) is the presence of very small numbers of tumor cells which may remain in the body following treatment. MRD testing currently has multiple clinical uses including the identification of disease relapse or in guiding patient treatment. MRD has traditionally been used in hematological indications but due to the increased availability of next generation sequencing (NGS) circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) based testing, MRD is increasingly being leveraged in solid tumor indications.

During this webinar, our internal expert on MRD testing, Dr. Bob Holt (Senior Director, Precision Medicine Strategy Advisor) will give an overview of the current and future use of Minimal residual disease (MRD) in hematological and solid tumors. He will analyze the clinical utility, the technology available and barriers that can arise using MRD providing also insights into key factors on the use of MRD in clinical trials.
