BIOGRAPHY
Viruses outnumber bacteria in soil by as much as 1000:1. However, there are few studies which examine the ways viral communities impact the soil microbiome, chemical cycles, and plants. Recent advances in viral ecology make it a discussion of soil viral ecology especially timely. Here, we discuss the burgeoning new field of soil virology, how DNA and RNA sequencing advances have allowed unprecedented insight into viral communities, and summarize recent discoveries. We then look to the future of soil virology, and discuss ongoing research in agricultural systems.
