Multiplex Bacterial PCR in Bronchoalveolar Lavage (BAL) - Does It Impact Inappropriate Antibiotic Use?

Pneumonia remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality. The use of broad-spectrum antibiotics is associated with the development of resistance, major side-effects and costs. Despite a higher sensitivity as compared to conventional microbiological diagnostics, molecular tests for bacterial lower respiratory infections are not well explored as a tool for enhancing antibiotic stewardship. This presentation will provide you the opportunity to review the rationale for using molecular diagnostics in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), to understand its role in the management of suspected lower respiratory tract infections, and to appreciate the newest results of a randomized trial evaluating the Unyvero multiplex bacterial PCR panel in BAL specimens to reduce inappropriate antibiotic therapy in patients hospitalized for pneumonia.
