Abstract
In 2017 the first national cervical screening programs using human papillomavirus (HPV-based) primary screening were implemented. As these programs have been implanted and developed further a number of questions have become apparent:
  • with over 300 HPV tests available which ones are suitable for use in a screening program
  • what is an appropriate quality framework for these tests
  • how can self-collection fit into cervical screening programs
  • HPV extended typing – how can this information be used in support of the current evidence base on cervical disease risk
These and other questions relating to the use of HPV testing in cervical screening programs will be covered using data from the Australian National Cervical Screening Program and other sources.

Key Learning Objectives:
  • Understand how to use the most effective HPV tests in a cervical cancer screening program
  • Understand how HPV self-collection sample type is becoming more critical in cervical cancer screening programs
  • Understand the utility and potential clinical benefits of extended HPV genotyping
