Scientific progress and breakthroughs today are often facilitated by the application of new technologies using high-end, cutting-edge instrumentation such as the new electron microscopes, which are often too expensive for most institutions to acquire. Each year, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) funds millions of dollars to institutions and their federally funded investigators seeking high-end instruments that bring these resources as shared instruments to advance new discoveries. Specifically, the NIH’s High-End Instrumentation (HEI) Grant program (S10) encourages applications from groups of NIH-supported investigators to purchase or upgrade a single item of high-end, specialized, commercially available instruments or integrated systems that range from $600k to $2M. Such systems include but are not limited to X-ray diffractometers, mass spectrometers, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers, DNA and protein sequencers, electron microscopes, cell sorters, high-throughput robotic screening systems, and biomedical imagers.
