This webinar will be broadcasted at two different times to accomodate our global colleagues*
Serious infections can be immediately life threatening: with serious invasive infections a single day can be the difference between life and death. Despite this urgency, standard practice in pathology laboratories remains tethered to culture-based tests that require isolation and growth of micro-organisms from specimens before reliable results can be provided to end-users.
The emergence of antimicrobial resistance complicates matters further. As more infections resist the broad-spectrum antimicrobial used as first-line empirical treatment, the need for better, faster diagnostics increases. At present, drug resistant infections kill as many 700,000 a year, every year. At the rate resistance is increasing, this figure is expected to reach 250 million preventable deaths by 2050, eclipsing both cancer and heart disease as the leading cause of death worldwide. The SARS-CoV-2 crisis has given the world a glimpse of what a post-antimicrobial future may begin to look like. There has never been a more pressing need for innovation to develop new microbiology tools.
In our laboratory, we have harnessed the speed and precision of the Attune NxT to innovate a new generation of rapid microbiology research tools. We will demonstrate how these tools function, how they can be used to accelerate laboratory workflows, and how the lessons learned can be applied to new and emerging challenges in the microbiology laboratory.
