Congenital CMV is the most frequent infectious cause of neonatal malformation in developed nations. Yet, this disease is largely under-recognized by health authorities and the general public. There is now a global movement to improve awareness, prevention and diagnosis to reduce the impact and burden of this disease.
In light of this, congenital CMV diagnostic algorithms have garnered much discussion in the medical science community. Both universal newborn screening and targeted testing have been proposed and explored, with each approach having its own advantages.
This two part presentation will provide an update on universal screening and targeted screening for neonates as well as a discussion on different specimen sample types and their respective clinical utility, which can impact on the overall clinical diagnosis.
