Procalcitonin (PCT) is an invaluable marker to help assess the presence or absence of bacterial infection and can be used as an aid in antibiotic therapy for patients with suspected or confirmed lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI). This presentation reviews the utility of PCT in the emergency department and describes its role in helping identify patients with bacterial infections at risk for developing sepsis and aiding in management of their therapy.
