Gene therapy continues to advance rapidly with new technology since 2008. It is a promising therapeutic avenue in medicine that could safely alter our DNA to eliminate threatening diseases. Some of these diseases include inherited blood disorders such as malignant hematologic disorders, hemophilia, and the hemoglobin disorders. Increasingly new methods seek to treat, for example, sickle cell anemia, a blood disease that results in abnormally shaped red blood cells or the treatment of thalassemia, which disrupts the production of a crucial blood protein known as hemoglobin.
