Most people, if not all, get sore a day or two after going through intense workout sessions. While it's common, there are ways to mitigate the soreness your body experiences after intense workouts. Physical therapist Erica Fritz from Orthopedic Physical Therapy Center at Hospital for Special Surgery explains how.
The first and most important thing you can do while performing an intense workout is to stay hydrated. Many people don't drink enough, and this can bring about muscle soreness much more quickly. Water is the recommended drink, but you can mix in a little bit of sports drinks with that if you wish.
Another important thing to do is never just 'plop' after an intense workout; keep moving. If you just got done with an intense workout, you may want to finish off with some light exercise, whether it's just a bike ride or a jog. Keeping your muscles moving can help mitigate muscle soreness in the days to come.
Lastly, you want to treat your muscles to some soothing stretches and massages the day the soreness comes around. Use foam rolls as you go these things and rest in between sessions for the best results.
Following all of these steps should help reduce pain from muscle soreness after an intense workout.
