Sartorius Refill Towers earn ACT Ecolabel, leading the way in sustainable pipetting
Sartorius has reached a significant milestone in sustainability and transparency by earning its first Accountability, Consistency, and Transparency (ACT) Ecolabel for its Pipette Tip Refill Towers. This internationally recognized ecolabel is offered by My Green Lab®, a non-profit organization dedicated to building a global culture of sustainability in science.
The ACT Ecolabel is a standardized measure of the environmental impact of laboratory products. The evaluation process examines multiple criteria across the product life cycle, resulting in the most comprehensive ecolabel available. Its aim is to provide scientists and procurement specialists with clear, third-party verified information, enabling better decision-making when comparing products from different manufacturers.
"Laboratories are increasingly aware of their environmental footprint and are seeking suppliers that help them reduce that impact. Access to clear information is vital for making informed purchase decisions about essential consumables, such as tips," said Maria Voutilainen, Product Manager of Liquid Handling at Sartorius. "The ACT Ecolabel effectively communicates the sustainability attributes of our Refill Towers, simplifying the process of choosing a more eco-friendly product.”
Refill Towers are a convenient and ecological way to refill single trays of Sartorius’ purity certified Optifit standard pipette tips. They are specifically designed to reduce plastic and packaging waste, encourage the reuse of tip boxes, and lower transportation emissions due to their space-efficient packaging.
Sartorius pipette tip manufacturing site in Kajaani, Finland utilizes renewable electricity, with LED lighting and waste heat recovery reducing energy use. The facility focuses on waste reduction, with a strong local recycling program for production byproducts. Bulk purchasing of materials for pipette tips lowers packaging and emissions, and the production process is regularly improved to decrease plastic waste. Additionally, the site works with a carbon-neutral waste management service to manage and offset its carbon emissions, including investing in carbon sinks to enhance its environmental sustainability.
